"A re-analysis of data from 63 randomised controlled trials, funded by the EEF, to look at the impacts of educational interventions on the attainment of young people who have had a social worker. We know that children and young people who have had a social worker have, on average, lower attainment than their peers. However, we do not have a good sense of what works to improve educational outcomes for this group.This project re-analyses data from the National Pupil Database and 63 randomised controlled trials (RCTs), funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), to look at the impacts of educational interventions on the attainment of young people who have had a social worker.The report identifies ten projects that we believe show ‘Signs of Potential’ – interventions that appear to have larger positive impacts for young people who have had a social worker than for their peers. Interventions that target parents and carers appear from our analysis to be particularly encouraging."

Nearly one in four low-income families enroll a child in an after-school program. Beyond sharpening students' math and reading skills, these programs also have a profound impact on parents. In a surprising turn—especially given the long history of social policies that leave recipients feeling policed, distrusted, and alienated—government-funded after-school programs have quietly become powerful forces for political and civic engagement by shifting power away from bureaucrats and putting it back into the hands of parents. In State of Empowerment Carolyn Barnes uses ethnographic accounts of three organizations to reveal how interacting with government-funded after-school programs can enhance the civic and political lives of low-income citizens."

"Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual’s circumstances and perceptions."

"Als iemand met een arbeidsbeperking een baan krijgt, heeft dat niet alleen voordelen voor de persoon zelf, maar ook voor de samenleving. Mensen met een arbeidsbeperking doen minder vaak een beroep op geestelijke gezondheidszorg en Wmo-ondersteuning als ze werk hebben. Ook daalt het risico op crimineel gedrag, dat zo’n 5 procent bedraagt in deze groep. Dit blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘De brede baten van werk’ van het Centraal Planbureau (CPB) en het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP). Deze voordelen komen bovenop de maatschappelijke besparingen op uitkeringen en de immateriële voordelen van werk voor mensen zelf, zoals zelfrespect en algeheel welbevinden."

"Economic inequality in Israel is among the highest in the OECD countries, and there are also high levels of inequality in educational outcomes. In this research paper, Dana Vaknin, Professor Yossi Shavit and Dr Isaac Sasson find that children who experienced poverty from birth to age 2 went on to do less well in school exams, while the same effect was not found for children who experienced poverty between ages 3 and 5. The researchers draw conclusions about the importance of the first thousand days of a child’s life and suggest implications for public policy."

"The political upheaval and dysfunction of recent years have focused political minds on better understanding the volatility underpinning European electorates. Interest in public opinion research has soared, yet it can be difficult to draw the findings of such surveys and focus groups into something meaningful and cohesive, from which genuine insights can be drawn. It is pertinent that policymakers at both the national and EU institutional levels grasp a clear and incisive idea of what is taking place culturally, socially and politically in EU member states, and that these tea leaves can be interpreted and harnessed to produce responsive, targeted policies.

This research analysis report sets out the findings of a major survey conducted across 13 EU member states (i.e. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands), which were selected to provide a representative snapshot of the bloc as a whole. This survey was expansive in its scope and unique in its focus on social and cultural issues, as well as politics, leadership and economic security. The data is interpreted through three distinct themes, each of which is likely to play a critical role in Europe’s ‘mood music’ over its coming parliamentary term: nostalgia, intergenerational conflict and democratic legitimacy. These themes have become the subject of much amateur punditry, although institutional understanding of their complex nature is often shallow. Therefore, this paper seeks to shine a more evidenced-based contextual light around their formation and nuances of application.

Chapter 1 considers the theme of nostalgia as a lens through which to explore dissatisfaction with the contemporary social, economic and political settlement. Chapter 2 examines the roles that gender and age play in the formation of public opinion in Europe, focusing particularly on the burgeoning intergenerational and gender-based conflicts brewing across social and political issues. Chapter 3 captures the inconsistent support for democracy across EU member states and interrogates citizens’ preferences for different styles of consensus-driven and more authoritarian forms of leadership. To conclude, reflections on the practical lessons of these trends and their consequences for national and EU-level institutions and political leaders are offered in the report’s final chapter, “Recommendations for Governance”."

"Al enige jaren constateert het SCP dat er verschillen zijn in het gebruik van jeugdzorg tussen regio’s. Deze verschillen zijn er niet alleen tussen gemeenten, maar ook binnen gemeenten tussen wijken. Voor een deel hangen deze verschillen samen met sociaaleconomische en demografische kenmerken: het gebruik is bijvoorbeeld hoger in regio’s met veel eenoudergezinnen of met veel huishoudens met een laag inkomen.

Om meer zicht te krijgen op de achtergrond van de verschillen heeft het SCP een statistisch model ontwikkeld op wijkniveau. Op basis van het model is het mogelijk om het verwachte gebruik van jeugdhulp zonder verblijf te berekenen binnen een wijk en dit af te zetten tegen het werkelijke gebruik. Daarbij is alle informatie die beschikbaar is op wijkniveau in de analyse meegenomen. Dit eerste model is ontwikkeld op basis van gegevens van het kalenderjaar 2017. Gemeenten kunnen deze informatie gebruiken voor de verdere afstemming van hun beleid."
