LSAY data have proven especially valuable to policy-oriented research focusing on youth

In late 2018, the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) identified the

financiële steun van de EU wezenlijke vooruitgang op het vlak van de behandeling van hersenaandoeningen zoals alzheimer en parkinson boekt. Trappist-1, betreffende de ontdekking van exoplaneten door de Luikse wetenschapper Michaël Gillon, de revolutionaire aanpassing van 3D-printen voor de mode- en designsectoren door Materialise in Leuven en de oprichting van het onderzoekscentrum Cenaero in Charleroi zijn andere vermeldenswaardige projecten in België die door de EU zijn gesteund. België ontvangt indirect een aanzienlijk deel van de administratieve uitgaven die de EU doet. Dit is te danken aan de aanwezigheid in België van tal van EU-instellingen, namelijk de Europese Commissie, de Europese Raad, het Europees Parlement, het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité en het Europees Comité van de Regio’s. De toegevoegde waarde van de EU-aanwezigheid voor het land wordt geraamd op €5 miljard per jaar. De landbouw (€708 miljoen) komt op de derde plaats qua aandeel in de EU-financiering in België. Met financiële steun van de EU heeft de vereniging Groupe d’Actions Locales (GAL) een serie studies uitgevoerd over de productie van biogas door runderen en de exploitatie ervan als energiebron voor de regio."

"How’s Life? charts whether life is getting better for people in 37 OECD countries and 4 partner countries. This fifth edition presents the latest evidence from an updated set of over 80 indicators, covering current well-being outcomes, inequalities, and resources for future well-being. Since 2010, people’s well-being has improved in many respects, but progress has been slow or deteriorated in others, including how people connect with each other and their government. Large gaps by gender, age and education persist across most well-being outcomes. Generally, OECD countries that do better on average also feature greater equality between population groups and fewer people living in deprivation. Many OECD countries with poorer well-being in 2010 have since experienced the greatest gains. However, advances in current well-being have not always been matched by improvements in the resources that sustain well-being over time, with warning signs emerging across natural, human, economic and social capital. Beyond an overall analysis of well-being trends since 2010, this report explores in detail the 15 dimensions of the OECD Better Life Initiative, including health, subjective well-being, social connections, natural capital, and more, and looks at each country’s performance in dedicated country profiles."

"Deze syllabus kwam tot stand als een werkdocument dat binnen het project trauma bij vluchtelingenkinderen en -jongeren gebruikt kan worden als leidraad voor het geven vanvormingen aan CLB-medewerkers, over de provincies heen. Via deze syllabus wordt er binnenelke provincie vertrokken van een gemeenschappelijke visie, kader en kennis rond trauma- encultuursensitiviteit. Daarnaast geeft deze syllabus de CLB-medewerkers die de vormingvolgden of optreden als ankerfiguur binnen hun CLB, een houvast om op terug te vallen en deopgedane kennis verder te verspreiden.Dit neemt niet weg dat er binnen elke provinciale werking andere accenten gelegd kunnenworden. Bovendien zijn er ook andere kaders of uitgangspunten mogelijk dan deze die in desyllabus worden beschreven. Er werd vertrokken vanuit de ervaring en kennis van detraumapsychologen. De syllabus heeft dan ook niet de bedoeling een volledig overzicht tegeven van wat er in de literatuur beschikbaar is, maar moet gezien en gebruik worden als eenniet-exhaustief werkdocument. Nieuwe inzichten of ontwikkelingen kunnen in de toekomstvragen om een herwerking of aanpassing van bepaalde elementen.Het project ‘Trauma bij vluchtelingenkinderen en -jongeren ’ liep van 1 december 2016 tot enmet 31 januari 2020. De laatste update van dit document dateert van januari 2020. Met hetaflopen van het project worden er verder geen updates van deze syllabus voorzien."

Working under pressure

"For many years, in most European countries, the public sector has been under pressure to reduce expenditure and increase efficiency. Long-term pressures on the public sector, and especially the recent austerity drives following from the crisis, have led to reforms and cuts in public budgets with serious negative effects on the European Social Model, on the quality of public services and on social outcomes, including health and inequality.

This book analyses the evolution of employment, job quality and labour relations in the public sector since the 2008 crisis in nine EU Member States: Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic, and the UK. It focuses on three sub-sectors: primary education, health care and municipalities. The authors show that the public sector reforms of the past few decades, as well as the more recent crisis-related austerity policies, have had important consequences for the number and quality of jobs across the nine countries. Public sector workers have frequently had to shoulder the burden of budgetary pressures through declining employment levels and job quality, including stagnating or declining (real) wages and the intensification and ‘extensification’ of work. Declines in the number of jobs and job quality have been strongest in the countries where the crisis has been felt the deepest, in particular Italy and Spain. However, in the last few years, there is a moderate recovery in employment and/or job quality, particularly in healthcare and primary education.

The authors have identified several broad trends in public sector labour relations. One is the turn of governments towards greater unilateralism in the initial crisis years. The second is the emergence of new industrial relations actors. Following the dissatisfaction of public sector workers and the limited success of the established trade unions to respond to this dissatisfaction, a variety of new unions, social movements, ad hoc pressure groups and other organisations have emerged. Thirdly, there has been a widespread increase in strikes, protests, campaigns and other forms of industrial action by public sector workers. Finally, the erosion of the quality of public services has become a central issue in the demands of trade unions and new social actors. They now consistently argue that good job quality for public sector employees is essential to guaranteeing and enhancing the quality of public services."

"Marking the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, as well as the first time that progress on the implementation of the Platform is reviewed in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this report takes an integrated approach to reporting on progress, gaps, and challenges related to the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. It uses striking data to examine six themes that link the Platform’s critical areas of concern and the Sustainable Development Goals:

Inclusive development, shared prosperity, and decent work
Poverty eradication, social protection, and social services
Freedom from violence, stigma, and stereotypes
Participation, accountability, and gender-responsive institutions
Peaceful and inclusive societies
Environmental conservation, climate action, and resilience-building

To ensure that progress is accelerated and achieved across all these themes, the report calls for four catalysts for change:

Support women’s movements and leadership,
Harness technology for gender equality,
Ensure no one is left behind, and
Match commitments with resources.

It highlights that what’s needed now is a concerted drive to scale up, expand, and deepen policies and programmes that can accelerate the implementation of the entire Platform for Action for this generation and the next."

"Sinds enkele jaren wordt in Nederland de term ‘high impact crimes’ (HIC) gebruikt om delicten aan te duiden die een grote impact op het slachtoffer, diens directe omgeving en het veiligheidsgevoel in de maatschappij hebben. Onder de klassieke HIC-delicten worden (gewelddadige) vermogensdelicten geschaard, om precies te zijn woninginbraak, straatroof en overvallen.
Sinds medio 2016 voert het WODC een vijfjarig onderzoeksprogramma uit naar de recidive van HIC-daders. Eén van de onderdelen van het programma is het periodiek berekenen van de recidive onder alle veroordeelde HIC-daders in Nederland. Er zijn twee eerdere recidivemetingen uitgevoerd. Deze hadden betrekking op HIC-daders veroordeeld in 2002-2013 en HIC-daders veroordeeld in 2002-2015 (zie links bij: Meer informatie).
In dit rapport staan de achtergronden en recidive centraal van daders van woning-inbraak, straatroof en overvallen die in de periode 2002 tot en met 2016 onherroe-pelijk zijn veroordeeld voor een dergelijk delict."

"In many industrialized countries, there is a sharp increase of the aging population due to a decrease in fertility rate and an increase in life expectancy. Due to which, the age dependency ratio rises and may cause increased economic burden among working age population. One strategy to combat this problem is to prolong peoples working career. A sufficient work ability is a requirement for a sustainable and prolonged employment. Work ability is primarily a question of balance between work and personal resources. Personal resources change with age, whereas work demands may not change parallel to that, or only change due to globalization or new technology. Work ability, on average, decreases with age, although several different work ability pathways exist during the life course. Work-related factors, as well as general lifestyle, may explain the declines and improvements in work ability during aging. A sustainable work ability throughout the life course is a main incentive for a prolonged working career and a healthy aging. Work ability and work-related factors, are therefore important occupational and public health issues when the age of the population increases. This Special Issue, “Sustainable Work Ability and Aging”, includes in all 16 original articles and one opinion paper, organized in three sections."

"There is agency in all we do: thinking, doing, or making. We invent a tune, play, or use it to celebrate an occasion. Or we make a conceptual leap and ask more abstract questions about the conditions for agency. They include autonomy and self-appraisal, each contested by arguments immersing us in circumstances we don’t control. But can it be true we that have no personal responsibility for all we think and do?

Agency: Moral Identity and Free Will proposes that deliberation, choice, and free will emerged within the evolutionary history of animals with a physical advantage: organisms having cell walls or exoskeletons had an internal space within which to protect themselves from external threats or encounters. This defense was both structural and active: such organisms could ignore intrusions or inhibit risky behavior. Their capacities evolved with time: inhibition became the power to deliberate and choose the manner of one’s responses. Hence the ability of humans and some other animals to determine their reactions to problematic situations or to information that alters values and choices. This is free will as a material power, not as the conclusion to a conceptual argument. Having it makes us morally responsible for much we do. It prefigures moral identity.

Closely argued but plainly written, Agency: Moral Identity and Free Will speaks for autonomy and responsibility when both are eclipsed by ideas that embed us in history or tradition. Our sense of moral choice and freedom is accurate. We are not altogether the creatures of our circumstances."
