"This publication, published every second year, provides a statistical portrait of the European Union (EU) in relation to the rest of the world. It presents a broad range of indicators for the EU and the non-EU members of the Group of Twenty (G20). It is structured into three parts: people and society — population, health, education and training, labour market, living conditions, as well as digital society; economy and business— economy and finance, international trade, business, as well as research and development; environment and natural resources— transport, energy, environment, as well as agriculture, forestry and fisheries."

"Studenten, wetenschappers, landbouwers, ngo’s, kmo’s, steden, regio’s en vele andere begunstigden in België ontvangen financiële steun uit de EU-begroting. Het op een na grootste deel van de EU-financiering in België (€1,8 miljard) gaat naar steun voor groei en werkgelegenheid, onderzoek en innovatie daaronder begrepen. Een voorbeeld in dat verband, is het Leuvense onderzoekscentrum imec, dat met
financiële steun van de EU wezenlijke vooruitgang op het vlak van de behandeling van hersenaandoeningen zoals alzheimer en parkinson boekt. Trappist-1, betreffende de ontdekking van exoplaneten door de Luikse wetenschapper Michaël Gillon, de revolutionaire aanpassing van 3D-printen voor de mode- en designsectoren door Materialise in Leuven en de oprichting van het onderzoekscentrum Cenaero in Charleroi zijn andere vermeldenswaardige projecten in België die door de EU zijn gesteund. België ontvangt indirect een aanzienlijk deel van de administratieve uitgaven die de EU doet. Dit is te danken aan de aanwezigheid in België van tal van EU-instellingen, namelijk de Europese Commissie, de Europese Raad, het Europees Parlement, het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité en het Europees Comité van de Regio’s. De toegevoegde waarde van de EU-aanwezigheid voor het land wordt geraamd op €5 miljard per jaar. De landbouw (€708 miljoen) komt op de derde plaats qua aandeel in de EU-financiering in België. Met financiële steun van de EU heeft de vereniging Groupe d’Actions Locales (GAL) een serie studies uitgevoerd over de productie van biogas door runderen en de exploitatie ervan als energiebron voor de regio."

2017 EESC Civil Society Prize

"The prize awards ceremony took place on 7 December 2017 during the EESC plenary session.

The first prize, of a value of 14.000 EUR, went to Discovering hands (Germany), a project which trains blind and visually impaired women, using their superior tactile sense to enhance early breast cancer detection.

The other prizes, of a value of 9.000 EUR each, went to:

REvive Greece, which helps refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to integrate into the receiving countries by teaching them computer programming and connecting them with young European entrepreneurs.

DUO for a JOB (Belgium), an intergenerational and intercultural mentoring programme which offers a free 6-month individual service for young migrant job seekers with people over 50 years of age who have professional experience in a similar field to theirs;

Progetto Quid (Italy), an ethical fashion brand which helps vulnerable and disadvantaged groups such as asylum seekers, victims of slavery, prostitution and domestic violence to enter the labour market;

Institute of Robotics for Dependency (IRD) (Spain) with its project Laundry ID aimed at creating jobs for people with disabilities in a laundry service technologically redesigned and adapted to their needs."

Voorvechters van onze vrijheden: 30 jaar Sacharovprijs

De SACHAROVPRIJS voor de vrijheid van denken, die in 1988 voor het eerst werd toegekend aan Nelson Mandela en Anatoli Martsjenko, is het hoogste eerbewijs dat de Europese Unie toekent aan personen die zich inzetten voor de mensenrechten. Hij is bedoeld om erkenning te betuigen aan individuen, groeperingen en organisaties die een uitzonderlijke bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de vrijheid van denken. Door middel van de Sacharovprijs en het Sacharovprijsnetwerk ondersteunt de EU de prijswinnaars, waardoor ze gesterkt worden en aan gezag winnen in hun strijd.

Focus op winnaars Sacharovprijs

Vijf activisten van de Arabische Lente kregen dit jaar de Sacharovprijs voor de vrijheid van denken tijdens de zitting in het Europees parlement van 14 december. De uitreiking viel samen met de verjaardag van de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens (1948).
Op de website van het EU-parlement vind je een dossier van genommineerden en (oud)winnaars van de prijs.
