"Migrant protest has proliferated worldwide in the last two decades, explicitly posing questions of identity, rights, and equality in a globalized world. Nonetheless, such mobilizations are often considered anomalies in social movement studies, and political sociology more broadly, due to "weak interests" and a particularly disadvantageous position of "outsiders" to claim rights connected to citizenship. In an attempt to address this seeming paradox, Migrant Protest: Interactive Dynamics in Precarious Mobilizations explores the interactions and spaces shaping the emergence, trajectory, and fragmentation of migrant protest in unfavorable contexts of marginalization. Such a perspective unveils both the odds of precarious mobilizations and the ways they can be temporarily overcome. While adopting the encompassing terminology of "migrant," this book focuses on precarious migrants, including both asylum seekers and "illegalized" migrants."

"Objective: we explore migrant-native differentials in the uptake of formal and informal childcare and whether this is induced by lower demand for childcare versus differential access to (in)formal childcare compared to natives. Background: The rise in female labour market participation in recent decades has challenged parents to negotiate work and family responsibilities and organise childcare. Belgium is among the European countries with the highest availability of formal childcare, but maternal employment and uptake of childcare are substantially lower in migrant populations. Methods: Combining linked microdata from the 1991 and 2001 censuses with contextual data on childcare availability at the municipality level, we use multinomial logit models to study childcare use and type of childcare arrangement among parents having a young child in 2001. As access to childcare and maternal employment are mutually endogenous, we use estimated employment opportunities. Results: We find considerable migrant-native differentials in childcare use, as well as substantial differences between first and second generation migrants. Second generation mothers of Turkish, Moroccan and Eastern-European background are less likely than natives to use childcare, and more likely to rely on informal arrangements if childcare is used. Controlling for socio-demographic characteristics and differential availability of (in)formal childcare largely accounts for differences in childcare use, but Turkish and Moroccan women remain less likely to use care and first generation Turkish mothers remain more likely to use informal care as opposed to formal childcare. Conclusions: While differences in socio-demographic characteristics, labour market opportunities and availability of (in)formal care provide a partial explanation, partial migrant-native differentials in childcare use persist for specific groups, suggesting that other factors inhibit the uptake of formal childcare."

"Myriatics 11" buigt zich over de cijfers voor 2018. Dit zijn immers de meest recente beschikbare gegevens. Het aantal repatriëringen en begeleide vrijwillige terugkeer neemt sinds 2016 af, daar waar de administratieve aanhoudingen en eerste vasthoudingen in gesloten centra zijn toegenomen. Maar Myria meent dat meer gedetailleerde cijfers over detentie (profielen van de vastgehouden personen, oorzaken en duur) en haar alternatieven door de autoriteiten beschikbaar moeten worden gesteld om een beter inzicht te krijgen in de kwestie. Het beleid in dit domein zou zich zo kunnen baseren op kennis en (cijfer)analyses van de feiten."

"Deelname aan het al dan niet georganiseerde vrijetijdsaanbod is belangrijk voor het welzijn, de integratie en inclusie van jongeren kort na hun migratie. Voor jonge nieuwkomers biedt vrijetijdsparticipatie een kans om leeftijdsgenoten te ontmoeten, om het Nederlands in een meer informele, buitenschoolse context te leren gebruiken en om hun zorgen te helpen vergeten. Onderzoek naar de vrijetijdsbesteding van nieuwkomers in Vlaanderen betrof vooralsnog vooral kwalitatief onderzoek en er waren geen representatieve, kwantitatieve gegevens over deze thematiek beschikbaar. De huidige studie beantwoordt aan deze leemte door gebruik te maken van zowel een reeks focusgroepen met OKAN-leerlingen als een grootschalige survey bij jongeren in het OKAN-onderwijs. Voor de focusgroepen gaat het om negen groepsgesprekken, met in totaal 55 leerlingen. De survey werd in 30 scholen afgenomen, en uiteindelijk werd er een respons van 1074 bruikbare vragenlijsten bekomen."
